Project Team

The process of cardiac catheterization, a procedure used to diagnose and treat certain heart conditions, requires a lot of equipment and delicate care. Working in Houston Methodist Hospital’s Walter Tower, SpawGlass had to balance the needs for two additional cath labs, totaling 3,300 square feet, with the adjacent operations of the active cath labs on the same level.
With a unique access structure, layers upon layers of subsurface work and accommodations for surrounding sensitive operations that could be unpredictable, Layton, though well-versed in healthcare projects, says he learned a lot on this project, just as he has on all of them. Project Manager Joe Mendyk echoed this sentiment for himself and Project Executive Matt Elliott.
Our team adapted to the hospital’s increasing patient needs, more sophisticated equipment and heightened infection control protocols to deliver this complex project for Houston Methodist Hospital within their timeframe while honoring their commitment to their patients.
Superintendent Layton Muehr led coordination between Jacobs, the design team, Siemens and other owner vendors to coordinate the intensive infrastructure requirements and specific needs for Siemens’ equipment, which was to be supplied and installed by the manufacturer. The 5-foot-deep structural recess was filled to bustling capacity with infrastructure that had to be carefully examined and organized as work was put in place. Once this was complete, the team was able to infill the structural recess, place the new finished floor and finish out the interiors in preparation for delivery and installation of the cath lab equipment the rooms were built to support.
